About Me
Lizzy Alageswaran
Visual and Mixed Media Artist
My Story
I am a visual and mixed media artist and art teacher, mostly working as a painter but I also use a variety of materials including willow and textiles. The medium I choose for an artwork is determined by the ideas I have, so along the way I am always learning new techniques and there is a cross-fertilization between different media which I find very exciting. I enjoy collaborating and sharing skills with people and artists. One of those artists is my husband Krishna - we share a studio and teaching workspace together in Sheffield called Walkley Art Studio and Pottery.
Currently I am combining my love of painting people and my interest in the environment and fragile landscapes with a series incorporating landscape, birds and a personification of the principle of caring for those environments.

I teach art theory and practice in my own classes in Sheffield and also for the WEA and the Coop in Sheffield and Chesterfield. Although I have practiced as a community artist for over 30 years, I arrived late to more formal teaching; it was daunting at first but I really enjoy sharing my learning and techniques.
I am also experienced in project development and management and have worked as a consultant for local authorities and other arts and education organizations on strategic development, community and public art and community development.
My Past
I started my creative career as a painter and graduated in 1987 from Coventry (Lanchester) Polytechnic. My main interest was painting murals and I was keen from the outset that art I created for public sites should involve the people who share that environment. I went on to paint a number of large murals and worked as a freelance artist until 1999, when I began working for a local authority.
From 1992 I worked as a Community Arts project manager for an artists' cooperative and then for 15 years with two local authorities as an Arts Development officer, developing and managing festivals, community events and public arts projects. At the same time I continued my creative practice and exhibited annually with Open Up Sheffield and other similar events. i am currently Co-Chair of Open Up Sheffield

In 2014, feeling like I just left Uni, I resumed life as a freelance artist. I can't say it hasn't been challenging, revisiting some of the internal conversations I had when I first stepped out with a new label of being an artist. What is my style? Do I have one? What sort of art should I be making? (note - there is no should). The answer is, I make art in the only way I can.
